We need your help

Mar 21, 2009 by Joseph Reeves

We're starting work on an Open Source animal bones database for use by Archaeologists (and others?) - it's going up on our Open Archaeology Launchpad site, but we've hit a snag - what do we call it?

Chris has emailed about it, Jo has blogged about it, but we're still without a name.

What would you call an Open Source animal bones database that will be finding use all over the world? Immortality is the prize awarded to the winner, there'll be no losers.

Comments:

A name for an Open Archeology DB...

I would suggest...

AthenaeumOnline

or

OpenAthenaeum

or

ArchaeologyAthenaeum

Keep it simple.

'bones'
Buy bones.org from Cornell's Pep Band too, their site sucks.

If it's for bones only, "FLOSSeous."

If it's for any items of archaeological significance, "Artifactual," or somesuch.

Bad puns and portmanteaux are at the lowest levels of software naming stratigraphy. ;)

Last year I had an idea for a project that would take old/dead open source projects, store them in a single location, that would allow people to take them over and what not. The name I came up with them was "Open Boneyard". It sounds like that name could also be used with this project. This project definitely sounds cool though, good luck with it!

Call it "boneyard".

I think this would be a valuable resource to 3d artists as well and game developers.

It simple : Archeologio

Why ? Because its the Greek word that means: a collection of archaeological findings.
For any other Greek word related to the project don't hesitate... just mail me..

What about Marrow?
It's what you get when you open bones, after all.

Sorry Michael, but it's not going to be a wiki (we've got a few of them in production already; installing mediawiki has never required us to post code to launchpad or ask the ubuntu community for naming help yet! ;)

The comp will probably be coming to an end soon, so if anyone wants fame and fortune, there aint too much time left to get it!

Or you want to mix animals, death, necropolis and the word 'open' you can call it:

Zoonecropenis

Mmmm... Ok, no, that was not a good one. Forget it.

This are serious

Zoomentery
or
Zoopmentery
or
Zoonecropolis

I'll see if I think about something better :)
