Hello Planet Ubuntu!
Hello Planet Ubuntu!
I decided the new year was a good time to finally get started.
So let's start with a quick disclaimer: yes, we are a company (more precisely an educational charity); we provide archeology services and heritage management mainly in the United Kingdom and in France. We've been involved in Ubuntu and free software for a while, and I thought it would be interesting to provide feedback about our experience using Ubuntu in an enterprise environment. So, we came up with a proposal to the Community Council a couple of weeks ago which ultimately turned into a corporate blogs policy for the planet. As you can see we are on "trial" so I hope we will be good citizens ;)
On the technical side, what will be this blog about?
- Virtualisation: We have been among the first to deploy KVM in a production environment. Expect tips and tricks about libvirt, KVM, jeos, ubuntu-vm-builder...
- Mobile GIS: as archaeologists we love maps! We believe maps and GIS tools on openmokos are quite nice...
- Ubuntu server: we have tens of Ubuntu servers and virtual machines around; apache as a reverse proxy with HTTPs, custom munin plugins, puppet, I've got some ideas of stuff to write about...
- Ubuntu Desktop: some of our archaeologists are getting interested in swapping their XP desktop with a Ubuntu one. I hope I will get them to post some feedback over here!
- ... and last but not least, Ubuntu, Canonical, Canonical support, Landscape. We've chosen Ubuntu as a platform because we believe it is one of the best around - some stuff is really great about it, but it's also not only pink, happiness and perfection everywhere - we hope we can help to push toward what we believe is the "right path" ;)
So, hello, and happy new year 2009 to the Ubuntu users!
Yann
I look forward to future posts about KVM - I've played with this a bit and am thinking about introducing this into the company I work at so real life experience from those that have deployed it would be fantastic.

Good stuff. It will be nice to see how Ubuntu is making out in the enterprise environment.

I'll be looking forward to reading about your experiences. We're also using KVM in production. We mainly use ZenOss for monitoring.

It is good to read you on Planet Ubuntu, Yann. I hope to hear about all the interesting ways you use Ubuntu, where we shine and where we may improve.
I hope we, Canonical support, have been living to your standard so far. If not, you should have my number somewhere! :)
