Ubuntu Hardy Heron won't be suitable for work use on release

Apr 22, 2008 by Joseph Reeves

Because there's a bug that stops you accessing password protected Windows shares; it just don't work.

:(

Comments:

Hey, Vista is arguably not ready for use in a work environment a year down the line, and you're complaining about Hardy pre-release?

:)

Of course, Microsoft's CEO doesn't even think Vista is ready for anything, so there's really no hope for that failing piece of software.

But Ubuntu? Unlike Microsoft's offerings I really like it, but they've broken a tiny little piece that I really need for work. So I can't come to the party :(

You could always use konqueror, dolphin, or some other apps like smb4k that allow you to access password-protected shares too.

But yeah, it sucks.

I'm currently running Kubuntu 7.10 at work, so I could just upgrade and everything would be ok. I want to go back to Ubuntu, however, and I'm a bit annoyed that this was broken in the latest release. Sure, I could install half of KDE and it would work, but I thought the point of a distribution was that everything was there and working without needing extras? Especially in a LTS release. The last thing I want is two file managers for different tasks; try explaining that to Windows users in the office, you'd soon be told that Ubuntu is not fit for purpose.

It seems to me that Ubuntu is going to take off by working better than Windows does in mixed environments like our office. At the moment, however, it fails in one crucial error. How did it even get released like this?

Latest patchset includes a bunch of smb fixes - time to try it again? Although Kubuntu has worked all along - the FD (as well as the CIO) is managing to use it as his desktop OS...

Now that Oxford Archaeology's use of Ubuntu is described within every Ubuntu installation (I wonder how may times that PDF got downloaded today...Could be a good blog post in itself), this issue is even more frustrating. I'll try again with the "security = user" option.
